(Altazimuth Sculpture)
(Seismograph Sculpture)
【Campus Technology Sculpture Design · Bronze Scientific Instrument Series】
Design Concept:
This sculpture series draws inspiration from ancient Chinese scientific wisdom, featuring artistic interpretations of three iconic instruments - the sextant, altazimuth, and seismograph. Through the fusion of bronze casting and abstract forms, the works embody the symbiosis of technological exploration and humanistic aesthetics. Combining historical depth with contemporary innovation, the sculptures are designed for university squares and science parks, stimulating intuitive understanding of scientific principles and philosophical contemplation.
-
Sextant Sculpture
The structure features interwoven dual bronze arcs with a 0.8m diameter main ring adorned with stellar trajectory patterns and graduated scales. Three groups of involute bronze sheets extend from the central axis, illustrating angular measurement principles. The base incorporates meteorite-textured brass plates that project dynamic sundial shadows. This work demonstrates ancient astronomical wisdom, its circular form symbolizing cosmic eternity, guiding viewers to contemplate spacetime dimensions.
-
Altazimuth Sculpture
Comprising three rotating bronze disks forming a 3D coordinate system, the main axis tilts at 23.5° reflecting Earth s axial tilt. The longitude ring displays cloud-thunder pattern reliefs, while the latitude ring exhibits gradient patina through electrochemical coloring. The base embeds twelve earthly branch方位 markers interacting with sunlight to create real-time projections. The spiral ascending form conveys endless scientific pursuit through its dynamic-static equilibrium.
-
Seismograph Sculpture
Abstractly interpreting the Han Dynasty seismometer principle, eight bronze pendulums surround a central toad-shaped catchment plate. The wave-patterned base, cast through lost-wax technique, simulates seismic waveforms. Surface textures combine crackle patterns with digital matrices, creating temporal dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Wind-activated bronze reeds produce ethereal sounds, artistically demonstrating wave propagation.
Craftsmanship:
Manufactured using high-purity bronze through 16 traditional processes, featuring thermal coloring and manual antiquing for over 50 years outdoor durability. Modular design ensures safe transportation and installation with rounded edges.
Educational Significance:
The sculpture group transforms complex scientific principles into visual language through tactile forms. The historical gravitas of bronze interacts with technological precision, creating immersive scientific and humanistic ambiance for campus environments.
